Course Description:
Maxillary sinus grafting using the lateral approach is often required in over half of cases to augment bone volume for posterior maxillary implants. This technique, pioneered by Boyne and James in 1980, remains the most established method. Through retrospective evaluation, its effectiveness has been well-documented.
Before proceeding with the procedure, it is imperative to assess both anatomical and clinical factors to tailor the surgical approach for optimal graft quality. Patients with underlying complications are particularly susceptible to failure, which can be attributed to variable anatomy, overall health, and dental conditions. These factors not only pose technical challenges but also impact post-operative sinus physiology, necessitating thorough analysis to quantify infection risks and implement preventive measures.
These modules are designed to equip practitioners with the necessary skills to successfully execute the lateral approach for maxillary sinus grafting.
Educational objectives:
After completion of these modules, participants are expected to:
1. Understand the anatomical variations and clinical considerations relevant to maxillary sinus grafting, enabling participants to accurately assess patient suitability and mitigate potential complications.
2. Understand the mechanism of bone regeneration within the maxillary sinus and to select the appropriate grafting material
3. Master the lateral approach technique for maxillary sinus augmentation, incorporating best practices to achieve optimal bone volume for successful implant placement in the posterior maxilla.
4. Identify risk factors for intra-operative complications and to implement the right surgical technique to prevent and to manage them.
5. Develop proficiency in analyzing patient predisposition for alteration of post-operative sinus physiology, including patient health status and dental environment, in order to minimize infection risks.
6. Diagnose mucositis and peri-implantitis according to current case definitions, to identify at risk patients, to implement preventive measures and manage diagnosed cases.
